How Daphne Avalon Kept “Twerk Fail” Hoax a Secret
By Krista Wick

September 10th 2013

Stunt woman Daphne Avalon became an overnight celebrity when her viral video, "Worst Twerk Fail Ever- Girl Catches Fire," was unveiled as an elaborate hoax produced by none other than late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. After the big reveal last night, ET's Nancy O'Dell and Rob Marciano were the first to sit down with Avalon, who let them in on how she kept the project a secret.

Turns out, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! crew had such faith in their star, they didn't even require her to sign a confidentiality agreement.

"They trusted me over at Kimmel," said Avalon, disclosing that only "close family" knew she was involved in the viral video which earned about nine million views in a week. She adds, "There was some concerned people. I told them that I was A-okay. No burns. No nothing." As for how she was picked for the project, Avalon isn't really sure considering twerking wasn't exactly part of her repertoire. "That was not on my resume, reverted twerking," she laughed. "It's really hard. It's like a full-onworkout because you're in a handstand and you're trying to shake your booty and that's not something I do on, like, a daily basis."

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Daphne was an avid water polo player, swimmer, a Reserve Champion Horseback Rider, with aspirations to be an Olympian.

Jimmy Kimmel's "Twerk Fail Girl" on YouTube worked, until the big reveal.

Caitlin Heller (aka "Worst Twerk Fail Girl") through a seemingly candid dance moment gone wrong. Once online, it exploded with interest and disbelief.

One week later, the girl everyone loved to watch twerk and fail -- with fire -- was revealed to be a stuntwoman named Daphne Avalon, who was part of an elaborate hoax orchestrated by Kimmel. But who is the fair Daphne Avalon?

Her video has over 15 million views since its launch and shocking reveal on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

This working Hollywood actress and stunt girl had never “twerked” before filming this video. Daphne was born and raised in Los Angeles, and grew up a sports nut. Daphne is an avid water polo player, swimmer and accomplished horseback rider.

A daredevil at birth, Daphne always wanted to combine her athleticism with Hollywood stunt work and in 2010; she was approached by legendary stunt coordinator Alex Daniels who put her through stunt crash training courses. She eventually began doing stunt work for shows including “Glee,” and is the lead role of the newest “Call of Duty” commercial.

Daphne’s new talent for “twerking” has shed new light on her career as she continues to study acting while she is currently a member of Blue 8 Stunt Group, a method of stunting that trains in ballet, parkour and yoga.

We asked Daphne some questions about her new fame:

Monsters and Critics: How did the “Twerk Fail” video get conceptualized?

Daphne: I was not involved in the creation of the worst twerk fail EVER. I was brought in just to do the stunts and acting by Alex Daniels, the stunt coordinator at Jimmy Kimmel Live.

M&C: Most dangerous stunt you ever did was...?

Daphne: When I was 7 years old, I fell 20 feet out of a tree and lived to tell the tale. Since the start of my stunt career, I can't pinpoint a very dangerous stunt. The scariest for me so far would be my first time doing a 30' ft. high fall.

M&C: What do you do to keep fit as a stunt woman?

Daphne: During the week I will train with my stunt group, Blue 8, in disciplines such as kung fu, parkour, dance, military and tactical training. I also train for stunts like fights, high falls and fencing with stunt coordinator John Moio and I take Tae Kwon Do at Simon Rhee's TKD Studio.

M&C: If someone wants to be a stunt person, what is their first and second step?

Daphne: The first step in becoming a stunt performer is being brave enough to do it. Not only can stunts be physically challenging, but it’s also a difficult industry to break into. It takes time and a lot of patience. Secondly, be safe and smart. Being a stunt performer means that you are a stunt professional - not a daredevil.

M&C: What advice would you offer Miley Cyrus regarding twerking in public?

Daphne: Twerking addictions are no joke. Seek professional help at once if you or someone you know has a twerking problem.

XCLUSIVE: Daphne Avalon talks to Kallum Green about “Worst Twerk Fail”
By Kallum Green

October 3rd, 2013

How did you become involved with Jimmy Kimmel Live?

“The stunt coordinator for Jimmy Kimmel Live, Alex Daniels, is a very good family friend; and he’s also the guy who got me into stunts. He called me for that job...”

Did you think the “Worst Twerk Fail EVER” video would be as popular as it is now?

“We shot it back in June, and we played the final tape back and we were all laughing at it hysterically. I don’t think there’s any way for sure if a video’s going to go viral, you just have to see what other people think of it. We had high hopes, but no expectations.”

How many takes did you do?

“We did three to get the timing down. The third one ended up being just right!”

How did you manage to keep it a secret for so long?

“It’s always been a bucket list for me to be in a viral video. Out of respect for Jimmy Kimmel Live, I kept it a secret; and I also wanted to see where it could go. I think if I opened my mouth about it, telling a bunch of people then that would have risked it not going viral.”

Could you tell your family?

“When it came out they knew about it, and the people close to me noticed it was me. I had to let them know what was going on...”

Has it had any effects on your career?

“None of that, yet. Fingers crossed it could still happen. I think it has gained me recognition in both the stunt and film industry. I think it will help lead to a future.”

What was the response from people around you when they found out it was you in the video?

“I think everyone was really proud and excited for me because it was such a huge thing. They all know I’m working really hard at my stunt career, and I think my friends and family that supported me were really excited that it got this big. I got a couple of people who had no idea it was me, and sent it to tons of their friends...

What’s next for you?

“I’m keeping up with my stunt training; I’m doing Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Parkour, horse- back riding and a bunch of other stuff... I will be hosting the online training facilities for my stunt group called The Blue 8. We are ready to launch that. Potentially looking for acting avenues this may open up for me, commercial, theatrical... we shall see! Other than that, keeping busy!”

Q&A: Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Twerking Girl’ Daphne Avalon

By Rick Mathieson

September 26th, 2013

What hath Miley wrought? On the heels of Cyrus's vivid gyrations at the MTV VMAs late last month, the 'Worst Twerk Fail Ever'

video took the Internets by storm, cementing the term in the American consciousness forever.

But, as Jimmy Kimmel revealed September 10, the video was

one of his famous pranks. And its star, one Caitlin Heller, wasn't really a victim at all. In fact, she wasn't Caitlin Heller at all.

Instead, she is Daphne Avalon, a professional stunt woman who - as we'll he hear in our special audio interview - was lucky to have friends who didn't spill the secret. And who, from an early age, demonstrated she had stunt work in her DNA.

Note to Warner Bros: If the rumors about 'Man of Steel 2' featuring not just Ben Affleck as Batman but also a yet-to-be-cast Wonder Woman are true - Avalon at least deserves an audition. As you'll hear, the likeness to the "Amazing Amazon" is something she's heard before.

YOUTUBE SENSATION DAPHNE AVALON

You know her as the beautiful young stuntwoman without whom the

famous #TWERKFAIL video and the pop culture phenomenon that followed would not be possible. Daphne Avalon teamed up with the people at Jimmy Kimmel Live to stage a YouTube prank that fooled not only me, not only the American public, but news outlets across the country. If you haven’t seen the video by now, which might be mathematically impossible given its millions and millions of views, the hoax was revealed in brilliant fashion on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier in September HERE, highlighting the many newscasts that covered the viral video in extremely serious segments focusing on “The Dangers of Twerking.” Although this might be Daphne’s legacy for a while, there is a whole lot more to the USC grad who has been practicing stunt work for years, and even appears riding a horse in a Call of Duty commercial! Daphne joins me to discuss the #TWERKFAIL video from all angles, how it came about, how they kept it a secret, what she got paid, how many takes they did, and much more! PLUS, the question that has been on everyone’s mind since Daphne twerked into our lives is answered...is Daphne single!? Find out on this week’s episode of A Shot of Yager! A fun show as always! Be sure to follow Daphne on twitter@DaphneAvalon and be on the lookout for her Blue 8 Stunt Team who will provide online courses in the near future! And remember kids...don’t twerk and drive.
